Perfection.

Perfection is an ideal, something to strive for because of what it can mean when we all work towards a common goal.  A collective group of people or an individual trying to be the very best at something.  I don’t believe that it can be attained, but I mean that in the best possible way.

We all falter, trip up, make mistakes on the path to perfection.  That’s good, teaches you what not to do and more importantly how to get back up.  Sports teams know this all too well, even those who have a completed a “perfect record.”  If your football team went 14-0 during their season, the record may be perfect, but the individual games…they made mistakes along the way.  A dropped pass, a missed block, perhaps even an interception.  It happens, can’t stop it.  But they learned from it, grew from it, and worked hard to be better because of it.

I am not perfect.  Let you in on a little secret, I never will be.  I work hard, try hard, but I will make mistakes too.  I was talking with a guest yesterday who was wearing his mask, but it was just below his nose covering his mouth.  This guest has some health complications and covering his nose with it causes difficulty breathing.  I know this, but that doesn’t mean that others know this.

Another guest gave us a call later to let me know their disappointment in my talking to this guest not wearing his mask all the way.  And you know what, they were right.  I was in the wrong and should have altered the style of our conversation.  I’m grateful that they called.  Appearances matter, thanks for helping me work to be better.

I won’t always be right or do the right thing.  Fact of life on earth.  But I will work to correct my mistakes, talk about them, grow and learn.  Part of being humble, part of being human, part of wanting to work on my own path to perfection.  I won’t ever get there, but when the path flows to the left or right, I will always work to get back on track.  That’s my goal for me.

Thanks for the call friend.  You’re a good human.

Today’s quote comes from my friend Vince.

Perfection is not attainable.  But if we chase perfection we can catch excellence.
