It is our great pleasure to announce this year’s lineup for the Max & Emily’s Summer Concert Series. Spanning seven shows over three months, this year’s lineup of artists delivers a diverse sound and style.
The series begins on Thursday, June 23, with Detroit’s Olivia Millerschin who will bring her award winning music to our stage. We were fortunate to have Olivia open for Jeff Daniels last August and she is excited to headline our first show of the `2016 season. A finalist for three 2013 and two 2014 Detroit Music Awards, winner of the 2014 John Lennon Songwriting Contest, and quarter finalist on NBC’s America’s Got Talent, we are pleased to bring her back to Mt Pleasant. She is currently touring, working on a new album, and writing music for several movie soundtracks.
Kelley Hunt, of Kansas City, makes her Mt. Pleasant debut on Thursday, July 14. Known for her soulful blues style, Kelley’s thoughtful and poetic lyrics merge perfectly with her five-piece band. Max & Emily’s owner Tim Brockman, following a suggestion from a friend, saw her perform in Minneapolis last fall and knew instantly that she would be a hit for our Summer Concert Series. With a career in music spanning decades, Kelley‘s polished lyrics and soul will fill the streets with the blues unseen at the series before.
Having taken a few years’ rest from our series, Mid Michigan’s The Saucecats will return on Thursday, July 21. With their New Orleans funk, zydeco, and blues style, as well as a blend of Latin and Caribbean numbers, they are an eclectic group of musicians known for making the audience part of the show. The Saucecats are the only artists in our history to have a 100 person conga line snaking through downtown. The crowd will be on its feet ready to dance the night away so be sure to be up close and be ready to grab an instrument and join the fun!
A Max & Emily’s Summer Concert favorite, Brian Vander Ark returns to our stage on Thursday, August 4. The Verve Pipe founder and lead singer will bring with him two good friends, Channing and Quinn, as special guests. The duo took Brian’s slot last year with their own headlining show and this year are excited to join forces with Brian to bring a unique set to our stage. Promising to go back and forth between lead and backup vocals, the trio will mix in originals from The Verve Pipe, Brian Vander Ark, and Channing and Quinn. You can expect everything from guitar to glockenspiel to accordion!
While having shared the stage with his father Jeff before, this year on Thursday August 11th , The Ben Daniels Band gets their well-deserved moment in the spotlight. They served as the house band for Jeff Daniels when he performed in the misting rain last August, this year they will excite the crowd with their youthful, energetic style. Having toured the country from New York to L.A.,The Ben Daniels Band has played sold out shows to thousands of new and old fans, winning them over with style and grace typically reserved for artists twice their age. His lyrics speak directly to a younger generation that hears, sees, and thinks about the very things he’s writing. From their opening song to the finale of their set, the Ben Daniels Band cuts through with their originality, musicianship, and a sound that spans Americana, Blues, Jazz, and Rock.
Making their debut on the Max & Emily’s stage on Thursday, August 18, Joe Hertler and The Rainbow Seekers are unlike any other band performing this year. Their publicity packet describes them: “They will roar into your life with rapturous frequencies, exuberant tone, and a joyfulness of purpose that has truly become a rare sight on stage. As you’ll know if you’ve seen the band, seeking the proverbial Rainbow is all about the live performance.” Says Hertler, “The live show is the purpose of the band. This is why we make music. Playing music is a symbiotic process, and without a crowd it is just a bunch of guys jamming.” This is a show destined for greatness and we cannot wait.
After taking a few years off, Michigan’s own The Ragbirds will close the season on Saturday, August 27. A fan favorite and requested every year, The Ragbirds’ style of folk music, rhythmic percussion section, and the vocals of lead signer Erin, capture the audience from the very first song. The Ragbirds give their fans a fantastic night of music and dance that leaves us all wanting more.
Each and every year we are also grateful to Central Michigan University, Isabella Bank, Downtown Mt. Pleasant, and Max & Emily’s for supporting the Max & Emily’s Summer Concert Series. The amazing people behind these local institutions believe that the series will continue to further our joint love of the community, the arts, fellowship, and family. We are looking forward to seeing you at the shows!
